No matter what the reason is to shape up, weight loss is something on the minds of many Britons and there are lots of ways to achieve results. Having a quick search online will bring up lots of different diet plans which all promise to help you beat the bulge. One popular plan is intermittent fasting, which restricts the days or times in which a slimmer is allowed to eat. This can be a great way to shape up but many slimmers are missing out on their goals by making one common mistake, an expert explained.

What can you eat?

The intermittent fasting diet plan can be followed in a number of different ways, Harry Aitken, Sports Scientist and Master Trainer at Auster Fitness, told

He said: “Intermittent fasting is a dietary technique in which all food is consumed within a relatively small window of time.

“Typically it begins with an 18 hour window of fasting. If you eat dinner at 7pm, you will fast until 1pm, whereupon you will eat food until 7pm, and the cycle repeats.”

As long as dieters follow the time scale and eat within their chosen window, they can be flexible on what types of foods they eat, however it is best to stick to healthy foods.

“The ideal is healthy, nutritious food full of nutrients. Lots of vegetables, some good proteins and carbohydrates,” Harry explained.

What must you avoid doing?

However, for dieters who are following the plan and struggling to lose weight, they must watch out for how late they leave their window.

He said: “If you eat a big meal right before bed, your stomach does not have the chance to shrink overnight.

“It is busy digesting food as you sleep, and as your metabolism slows down overnight it digests slower – meaning this process takes longer. If you’ve ever wondered why you feel hungry in the morning after a big meal, this is why.

“Typically your stomach digests all the food, then shrinks, as it has nothing in it, and you wake up with a small stomach, not feeling hungry.

“Whereas by eating a big meal, it doesn’t shrink overnight, and you wake up with a big stomach groaning for food.”

This means slimmers could be less likely to overeat after trying out intermittent fasting.
