The devil works hard, but the Fab Five work even harder. We’re currently between seasons of Netflix’s makeover show Queer Eye, but fashion expert Tan France is still helping people look and feel great. In a recent interview with GQ, Tan offered up his professional advice on how to look your best—even in the summer heat.
First things first, he believes that buying a whole new wardrobe for your summer vacation is “a complete waste of money,” saying: “Use the clothes you’ve got in your closet. If you’re happy with them every other day of the year, then your holiday shouldn’t be much different. I would suggest taking as little as possible and try to carry on as much as possible, I work with a capsule wardrobe, which allows me to break up pieces. I also wear the heaviest thing for the flight.”
He added that layering is a nice simple way to stay comfortable and look good while traveling across different climates.
When it comes to summer weddings, Tan sticks to a suit, although he points out that it doesn’t have to be super formal. He favors light colors and linen blends, and eschews ties entirely. “I wouldn’t necessarily wear a tie to a wedding, as I want to feel more me… If it’s a super-casual wedding I would actually wear a T-shirt underneath my suit.”
And as for putting together everyday summer outfits, he thinks there’s nothing wrong with grown men showing off as much leg as they like. “In the US it’s ridiculously hot and often humid, so I often like to wear as little as possible,” Tan says. “I’ll wear short shorts – the shortest I can possibly find – and then I’d go with a really simple shirt, a button-up shirt.”
